Based on the author’s Middle Eastern anthropology series for CBS-TV’s « Sunrise Semester, » the book relates the study of the region to the analysis of complex societies.
It addresses how scholars learned about the Middle East from late 18th- and 19th-century explorations, and how family life and tribes accommodate to modern traditions.
The structure includes an introduction to how the region has been understood in the past (Part I) followed by an interpretation of how Middle Easterners see their own society and culture (Part II).
The final sections analyze Islam and religious experience (Part III) before concluding with an assessment of the impacts of political and economic change (Part IV).
